Concerning sustainability science:
In a way the sustainability issue itself is the result of dualistic, conceptual mindsets, thinking and emotional reactions. The mind and its practical functioning are not yet sufficiently considered in sustainability sciences and studies. While classical environmental psychology addresses the mind from a theoretical and conceptual point of view, the experience of mind and thus the practical transformation of non-sustainable mindsets cannot be accessed by means of intellectual, conceptual thinking, theory and models (since this kind of thinking is not recognizing itself as thinking and thus is limited or stuck in its understanding). Mindfulness-based contemplative approaches to mind, self, thoughts and emotions as precursors of views and intentions and eventually as precursors of environmentally relevant actions can therefore be an attractive complement to environmental and sustainability sciences.
Concerning students of environmental and sustainability science:
These studies are usually highly complex and demanding, combining amongst others versatile perspectives from social science, environmental psychology and governance and also ethics with advances in technology. This requires students to have a highly developed cognitive ability. Nevertheless, the commitment for such studies might be based on both a rational but also an emotional motivation - often facing a generally overwhelming non-sustainable reality and emotional complexity. Therefore, emotional balance as well as a distinct clarity about their personal identity, motivations and aspirations can provide a stable foundation to carry on. Above all, university life, studies and exams are quite chellanging and a serious cause for stress across all disciplines.
The MindEnvironment Project offers university courses and MSc modules introducing the interdependence of mind and environment from both a theoretical and practical point of view. We try as best we can to combine classical and traditional scientific theories of mind and psychology with mindfulness-based contemplative apporaches to highylight the mental roots of human actions and practical pathways, skills and qualities for the cultivation of wholesome and ideally more sustainable mindsets. This reflects a rather young emerging field of science. We also offer classical courses in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to support overall student and teacher wellbeing, which, however, are also a very helpful tool to explore own thougts, body sensations and emotions as a basis for self-understanding and understanding other fellow human beings.
